1990 XJ, 2" budget boost, with 31" Wildcats. Last night the wifey made this statement " I think it would look better if it were a little taller", so next week the XJ will become 3.5" taller so it will have about 5.5" of lift with a 8.25 rear axle locked.

thanks, now I can use a little finesse (sp?) instead of too much of the skinny pedal. Hope to make this one do what Gulches can throw at me.

Riff Raff did very well up there with his XJ... but he and I both avoided the nasty trails (heart breaker, radical ravine, shipwreck)... although I do want to try shipwreck next time. :)

I suggest a winch before you try those trails:cheers2:

it may take me a little time to get ready for gulches. still need to take the
d35 out of the rear and lock a 8.25. Going to lock the front also. Prolly go with aussies, really impressed the difference they made in the waggy at URE.

I got the winch part covered, just need the bumpers to go with it.

And Joe you left early on Sunday, we did some pretty nasty trails in the pouring rain after you left, and my "little" XJ followed the big boys everywhere they went.

The 90 looks good, just remember anything over 6in will require long arms. You're gonna need new tires cause the 31s will look small with 5.5in of lift. Now if we just knew someone who would take those 31in M/Ts off your hands.... (Cue Michael) Let me know how you like the aussie in the front, I am thinking putting one in my D30 also, but that will come later.

cool you also would need adjustable track bar... look into long arms and you could cut your fenders(well) and clear 35's nicely...one of our members has done that and it looks great... you'll notice it will flex better so you don't need to run it so hard to get up somthing... :)

thanks for the heads up on the axle. how much fab work is involved in swapping in a d44? either from an older cherokee or rodeo.

going to keep these tires for now, but i will keep you in mind once i jack it to jesus.

Cherokee 44 will bolt right up.. Only issue i could imagine is ABS if you have it

cst756
05-28-2009, 03:53 PM
I haven't looked but I don't it has abs from the way it fells when I stop.

I wonder how much stronger the d44 is compared to the 8.25? I think the 44 has 30 splines and the 8.25 has 29 splines if its 99 or newer. The 8.25's are a lot cheaper, most not more than $100.

If anybody has any input it would be helpful.

They are very very close as to strength. You really can't go wrong with either one... The 8.8 is stronger then them all and all you have to do is weld some spring perches and shock mounts and they are good to go.

I thought about that 8.8, also read some post about 9" with 40 splines. I think they are all strong, cheap axles. I need to look up gear ratios for the 8.8 and 9 to see if they came with 3.55. I'm sure they did. I called a guy about a $75 8.25 but he hasn't called me back yet. I figure for 75 I can't go wrong.

NCJeepin

9" isn't going to have the bolt pattern you need.. not to mention the 8.8 has the right pattern and it also has disc brakes

XJ_Dutch

Yea I thought about gettin that same 8.25 ur talkin about cst.
But I know eventually Im gettin the 8.8 so I'll just wait.
