While the start date for the Jeep Grand Cherokee which is to be its first home is still reportedly months away, the Pentastar V6 has entered production in the Trenton (Michigan) Engine Plant. Sources say the plant has been operating slowly for quality reasons, producing mere dozens of the engines each week and sending them to intensive testing areas. Chrysler is replacing its entire V6 engine lineup with the Pentastar series, starting with a 3.6 liter version with a listed 280 horsepower, making its reputation for (and actual) quality critical for Chrysler’s future.
A ceremony including Governor Granholm will be held at the Trenton Engine Plant on Friday to celebrate its launch.

awesome... 280 hp in the JK's... what about the gas mileage?
I wonder what the torque numbers are going to be.... Horsepower is great and all but with a sizeable vehicle the torque is what matters at the end of the day. Plus that 280 is probably at the flywheel.
What they really need is a better transmission... my 4 speed auto really brings the suck compared to the 6 speed manual. I dont understand what they are not looking at 5 or even 6 speed auto, It would certainly allow for better gearing. Hopefully this engine will help a bit, but jeep needs to be looking at more than just the engine IMO
so sorry I was off a year in production :) ... so its been 24 years since a v8 was in one, I dont think they're coming back. Better chance of either a hybrid or diesel.
So you're not a fan of the automagic in the Unlimited Joe? I test drove the 6 speed recently, the transmission felt cheap and the gears were really close together. Just didn't feel right, I think it had 3.07 gears too that thing was a boat. But man it drives smooth, I am still torn. I dont ever see a v8 in a factory wrangler either, I'm skeptical they'll ever put a diesel in either.
